Read this first: the Government of Canada requires the photographer or studio to stamp or write the date and their name and address on the back of a passport photo, and requires one photo to be signed by your guarantor. A photo you make at home cannot carry that stamp, so it will be refused for a passport application. Canada requires the photographer's name, address and the date to be stamped on the back of a passport photo, and one photo to be signed by your guarantor. The passport rules
A Canadian passport photo is 50 mm wide by 70 mm high (2 by 2¾ inches), with the face measuring between 31 mm and 36 mm from the chin to the crown of the head, against a plain white or light-coloured background with a clear difference between the face and the background. Neutral expression, eyes open and clearly visible, mouth closed, not smiling or frowning, facing the camera. Glasses are allowed if the eyes are clearly visible with no glare on the lenses, but not sunglasses or tinted glasses. The photo must be taken no more than six months before you apply, and you need two identical prints.
The back of one photo must show the date the photo was taken and the name and complete address of the studio, written or stamped by the photographer, and your guarantor must write "I certify this to be a true likeness of [your name]" and sign it. This is the rule that rules out a home photo for the passport itself.

The unusual size
50 × 70 mm is taller than the 35 × 45 mm most of the world uses and larger than the US 2 × 2 inch square, so a photo cropped for another country will not pass. The tool outputs 591 × 827 pixels at 300 dpi for this preset. On a 4×6 print it fits four copies in portrait orientation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I print this and take it to a studio to stamp?
A studio will only stamp photos it took itself — the stamp certifies the photographer, not the print. For a passport, have the studio take the picture.
Do child passport photos follow the same rules?
Yes, including the stamp and guarantor requirement, with some tolerance for infants' expressions.
What size is the face measured?
From the chin to the crown of the head — the top of the head, not the hair — between 31 and 36 mm. The tool places it at 33.5 mm.
