Chinese passport and travel-document photos follow one specification, published by the National Immigration Administration and reproduced word for word by Chinese embassies and consulates: 33 mm wide by 48 mm high, colour, white background; the head 15–22 mm wide and 28–33 mm high from chin to crown; 3–5 mm between the crown and the top edge and at least 7 mm between the chin and the bottom edge; taken within six months. The official specification
Size 33 × 48 mm, colour, white background, glossy photo paper, no border, no retouching or composite images. Head width 15–22 mm, head height (chin to crown) 28–33 mm, crown 3–5 mm below the top edge, chin at least 7 mm above the bottom edge. Full frontal view with both ears, eyebrows and all features visible; natural expression, eyes open, mouth closed.
No hats or head coverings (except for religious reasons, and then the face must be fully visible), no earrings, no tinted glasses or heavy frames, no heavy make-up, no coloured contact lenses. Dark clothing is advised so the collar contrasts with the white background.
How the template works
Select this preset, drop in your photo and drag it until the crown touches the top guide and the chin sits in the grey band. The guides are the 28–33 mm rule at scale, so the head height, the 3–5 mm top gap and the 7 mm bottom margin all follow. The background is replaced with pure white in the browser.
Printing
Download the 4×6 sheet and print it as a standard 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) photo; cut along the lines. Nine 33 × 48 mm photos fit on one sheet. Consulates usually ask for two or three identical prints — check the office you are applying to.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as the 小二寸 size?
Yes. 33 × 48 mm is the 小二寸 (small two-inch) format used for Chinese passports, travel permits and most exit-entry documents.
Can I upload this photo in the China Consular app?
Yes. The consulates state that the electronic photo uploaded in the app must meet the same specification as the printed one. Upload the JPEG downloaded here.
White background only?
Yes — the specification names white and nothing else, so the preset offers only white.
How many copies do I need?
It depends on the office: consulates commonly ask for two or three identical prints; the domestic exit-entry office takes the photo on site or accepts a digital one. The 4×6 sheet gives you nine.
