Why passport photos get rejected
Every rejection is one of a short list. Here is the list.
A rejected photo costs a trip or a resubmission, and the reason is almost never mysterious: agents and upload checkers apply a short list of rules. Half of them are geometry the tool draws for you to line up against; the other half are things you check in the picture before you download.

Reasons the template takes care of
Head the wrong size — too much or too little of the frame. This is the most common rejection for home photos and the one the tool exists for: it places the head in the middle of the allowed range and draws the official crown line and chin band to scale, so you can see at a glance whether the head is inside them and drag or zoom until it is. Wrong photo size: 35 × 45 mm submitted for a US application, or a 2 × 2 crop for a UK one. Choose the preset for the document and the size is exact. Wrong background colour: white where cream is required, or a wall with texture; the tool replaces it with the colour the preset allows. File too large or the wrong pixel size for an online form: the tool encodes to the limit. Resolution too low to print sharply: the checklist warns when the source photo is too small.
Reasons you check
Shadows on the face or behind the head — from side light, overhead lights or a flash — are the top reason studio-quality-looking photos are refused. Retake facing a window. Glasses: banned in US photos since 2016; only with a medical certificate for Australia; only if unavoidable and untinted for the UK. Expression: a smile with teeth, a frown, closed or squinting eyes; keep it neutral with the mouth closed. Head covering without a religious or medical reason. Hair across the eyes or the jaw. A filter, beauty mode or retouching — the US requires an unedited photo. Photo older than the limit: six months for the US, Canada and Australia; one month for the UK. Wrong paper: prints on plain paper, or on photo paper but from a low-quality inkjet; use a kiosk. Photos that do not match each other when two identical ones are required; print both from the same sheet.
Fixing it
If the reason is geometry, drop the same photo back into the tool with the right preset. If it is light, expression or glasses, retake — it takes a minute — and the home photo guide lists the setup. If the rejection came from an online upload checker, the message usually names the rule; the file-size page covers the digital ones.
Frequently asked questions
The agent said the head is too large. What size should it be?
For the US, between 1 and 1⅜ inches from chin to crown on a 2 × 2 photo. The tool places it at 30 mm — 1.18 inches — the middle of the range.
My photo has a slight shadow behind me. Will it be rejected?
Possibly, for a print. The tool replaces the background entirely, which removes shadows behind you; shadows on the face itself need a retake.
Can a passport photo be rejected for being too good?
Retouched skin, removed blemishes or a filter can be refused as an edited photo. Crop and background replacement are the only edits allowed.
